General
Currently, we only accept cash payments, either in Albanian LEK or EURs. We also ask travellers to note that no Banks or ATMs are nearby. There is just one marketplace in Tamarë where exchanging Euros for Albanian LEK is possible, so it is wise to ensure you have enough cash before arriving in the region. We will, of course, provide you with more information regarding this when you make your booking with us.
For sure! Despite some stigmas that still cling to Albania's image, travellers will find that this country is a highly welcoming place and its people are some of the most hospitable in Europe.
Nope! Currently, no regulations restrict travellers from arriving to/travelling within Albania.
Depending on your booked package, your trip will include the following:
- Friendly guided escort from local guides to/from remote shepherd homes in the high pastures of the Albanian Alps
- The chance to experience the authentic life of nomadic Malësorë shepherds in their summer encampments
- 2 meals per day (if booking our "Day in the Life" or "Custom" package)
- Snacks, drinks from local drinking spots or when visiting shepherd
homes on the route
- A donation to our fund, which is set aside for development projects in the region
Options to ride on horseback in the high pastures or a taxi service to/from Tamarë are also available for an additional fee.
Yes! The Malësorë shepherds, like Albanians at large, are very accommodating people. Therefore, if you have specific interests or needs on your journey, we would be happy to use our connections to help you plan your ideal experience with us.
The Shepherd's Way Albania is unique in that it is the only social business which operates for/by Malësorë shepherds to support the local community in the region of Kelmend directly.
Although many tourism operators exist in other parts of northern Albania, such as in Theth and Valbona, there are not many which give travellers a chance to spend time with locals in this part of the Albanian Alps or that offer the opportunity to experience and support the preservation of the authentic life of Malësorë shepherds.
Yes, we do! Please let us know if you are a photographer, videographer, content creator, influencer, anthropologist, or other professional willing to collaborate with us and help promote our work in Kelmend. We will be happy to discuss how we can work together in exchange for a reduction in the price of our tours!
Preparing for your Visit
When you book with us, we will provide you with a detailed list of instructions on things to bring and suggestions of rules to follow when staying with us.
But here's a basic idea of the items we suggest you bring:
- Good hiking shoes & socks
- Wet wipes and tissue paper (even many of the local cafes and restaurants don't always have a reliable supply of toilet paper)
- Practical and multi-functional clothing items
- Headlight (especially useful if you need to use the bathroom at night)
- Extra battery and power bank for your phone
- Water bottles
- Sunscreen + a field hat, or cap
- Sleeping bag, tent & foam mat (if you choose to camp with the shepherds overnight)
- Personal cup, spoon & plate
- Healthy, energetic snacks that make you happy (nuts, dried fruit, etc.)
- Shampoo (If you'd like to wash your hair during an extended stay with the shepherds)
and of course, a positive, open mindset! :D
The term "Malësorë" actually refers to all mountain highlanders throughout Albania and parts of Montenegro. However, you will meet the shepherds throughout Kelmend, northern Albania, and spend time with them in their summer encampments throughout Lëpushë, Kopprisht, Budace and Vermosh.
There are different ways to reach us.
Suppose you are travelling by car, motorbike, campervan, or bicycle. In that case, you can meet us in Qafe Perdolec, located on the SH20 road, which takes you from the Vermosh/Guci border crossing in the north of the country, all the way south past Tamarë towards the other Montenegro border crossing of Hani i Hotit/Bozhaj or Shkodër.
If you do not have a vehicle and are coming to/from Shkodër, there is a local bus reaching Qafe Perdolec from Shkodër, which leaves once daily around 1 pm and costs 700LEK (approx. 7 EUR) per person. We can provide you with more information about where/how to take this bus when you book your tour with us :)
Sometimes yes, but not always. Due to the remote location of the shepherd families, reception is spotty at best. Although there are some locations we can bring you with Wifi, they are only sometimes reliable, so it's best to assume that you will have minimal access to the internet during your time with us.
We bring a few bottles of water and refill them with fresh spring water along the way (these water sources are crystal clear and used by the shepherds themselves).
Depending on your booked package, we might trek between 5-15km daily.
We will be willing to accommodate your preferences. However, when some families are unavailable some days, we will find an alternative that best suits your needs. But this will, of course, be discussed with you beforehand :)
Our "Day in the Life" package allows you to stay with a shepherd family for a full day (optionally overnight). Still, if you wish to stay longer with them, you can opt for our custom package. We can arrange with the shepherds for you to stay longer with them for an additional and fair price that covers your extended stay.
Although we encourage people to travel with us in small groups (it's also better price-wise for you), we typically limit the number of people to approximately 4. If your family is larger, or you would like to travel with a group of friends, you can request to book our custom package, and we will coordinate with the shepherds on how best to host you all.
Although living in the high pastures with the shepherds requires a certain level of physical fitness, generally, if you can walk, you can experience life with the Malësorë shepherds! However, if you are still deciding, even if you opt for our "Meet & Greet Day Hike" package, you can let us know about your general hiking experience. We can find you a suitable route that is less strenuous if needed.
When you book with us, we will provide you with an additional list of instructions on things to bring and suggestions of rules to follow when staying with us. But in general, we ask that you keep an open mind and respect your hosts and their customs.
The Kelmend region has some bears, wolves, and snakes, but they rarely venture near the encampments of the shepherds. We have never had issues with wild animals coming near tourists when camping at night. Still, the shepherds always keep their dogs nearby to alert them of any unwelcome visitors nearby and keep their families, animals, and guests safe throughout the night.
The Albanian way of serving dinner usually involves cooking a variety of separate dishes and ingredients to provide a balanced meal at the table, so it is okay to take what you like and leave the rest if there's something you don't like. We understand that getting used to unfamiliar foods can be difficult for everyone, so as much as we try to stick to the shepherds' diet while we're with them, we can also provide some other canned foods/snacks that can resemble the food you eat at home.
This a valid fear, but we must remind ourselves that not showering, albeit uncomfortable, is not fatal. This experience is to show us how the shepherds live, with all their hardships and challenges. When staying with the shepherds, they can prepare you a bucket of hot water to "shower" or wash your hair with (as they do) if needed. However we recommend that you bring plenty of toilet/tissue paper, wet wipes, and changes of clothes as a backup to keep you covered.
